FORT MILL — A split in Region III-AAAA matches put the Fort Mill High tennis team at .500 early in the season.
Fort Mill beat Rock Hill 5-1, but fell to Lancaster by the same score to start the season at 2-2.
Against Rock Hill, Fort Mill won four of its singles matches in straight sets as Jay Karwatsky led at No. 1 with a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Luke Powell won by identical scores of 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Billy Taylor won 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 4 and Sam Cauthen won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5.
In the only doubles match, Chandler Paff and Jack Cauthen won 6-2, 6-1.
Head coach Willie Ware, who was recently elected to the York County Hall of Fame, said he feels like this year’s squad is a playoff contender, but knows it won’t be easy.
“Between Nation Ford and Clover, we got our hands full,” Ware said. “We should be in the pack, but it’s going to be a dog fight.”
Fort Mill’s schedule is comprised of all region matches, so they won’t have the luxury of seeing non-Region foes.
In the match against Lancaster, Fort Mill saw just how tough the region was going to be as they fell 5-1.
The Jackets’ only win came in the form of the doubles team of Paff and Jack Cauthen as they won 6-2, 6-4.
Karwatsky fell 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. No. 2 singles Tyler Haley missed the match due to the band’s trip to Ireland.
That pushed Powell up to No. 2 where he fell 6-1, 6-4 and Taylor up to No. 3 where he fell 6-2, 6-0.
No. 4 Sam Cauthen fell 6-3, 6-3 and No. 5 Alex Malaj fell 6-1, 6-0.
The Jackets take on Northwestern and South Pointe this week.
