FORT MILL — It took almost six years in the making, but Fort Mill finally got one up on its rivals.
The Fort Mill varsity softball team beat the Nation Ford Lady Falcons 5-2 on the diamond for the first time since Nation Ford opened in 2007-08 school year.
The win was a much needed boost for Fort Mill, which improved to just 5-10 on the season and 3-5 in Region III-AAAA.
“We have played some real good games against them over the years, but they have had our number,” said Fort Mill head coach Chuck Stegall. “We are a very young team and we have got to learn to win. Tonight our youth came through.”
Falcons head coach Michael Kidd shook his head and gave a lot of credit to Fort Mill.
“We got out played,” he said. “Fort Mill played a very good game. They made the plays they needed to make.”
The Lady Jackets’ shortstop Danielle Gibson got things started for Fort Mill in the top of the sixth inning as she singed to lead things off.
Left fielder Shelby Alexander would then drive Gibson in to break a 2-2 tie and give Fort Mill the 3-2 lead.
Fort Mill pitcher Kelly Finn then shut down Nation Ford in the bottom of the inning getting a 1-2-3 inning.
In the top of the seventh, Fort Mill broke it open to seal the win as right fielder Danielle Patton singled to open the inning before first baseman Julia Rajcok doubled to drive her in. Rajcok would then score on a bases loaded walk given up by Nation Ford’s Brooke McCurry to catcher Cassie McInerney.
Both teams came out swinging to open the game in what looked like it was going to be a high scoring battle.
Fort Mill led the game off with a single from second baseman Taylor Rayborn. Three batters later third baseman Hyatt Causby drove Rayborn in on a single of her own to put the Lady Jackets on the board.
Nation Ford came right back in the bottom of the inning as they went on top scoring two runs. Second baseman Haley Hammond singled for the Lady Falcons and then shortstop Mandy Mitchell doubled to drive her in.
Centerfielder Lauren Kidd would then single to knock in Mitchell as Nation Ford would take their only lead of the game.
In the bottom of the second, Rayborn would tie things up at 2-2 as she would double in Patton, who reached on a fielder’s choice.
After that inning both starters, McCurry and Finn, would settle down giving up a hit here and there, but nothing to threaten to break the game open until the sixth inning.
Finn would go the complete game allowing just two runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out two in the win.
