With a 10-5 record, members of the Nation Ford boys’ golf team are hoping to peak at the right time as they near the Region III-AAAA tournament.

With the tournament being a week and a half away on April 29 at Lancaster Golf Club, the Falcons are coming off a successful week as they head into the home stretch of the season.

Nation Ford beat Northwestern, Lancaster and Fort Mill recently, while falling to South Pointe and York twice in three separate three-way matches.

Falcons head coach Mike Smith said he is happy with how his seniors have stepped up.

“We have tremendous senior leadership in players like Corey (Verhage),” Smith said. “I feel good about what we have done and I am looking forward to the region.”

Verhage is one of four seniors with John Neal, Tyler Welliver and Nick Turner on this year’s team. Verhage is leading the team with a 39 average for nine holes.

Against York and Northwestern at Springfield Golf Course, home of the Falcons, Nation Ford shot a 160 as a team, compared with York’s 158 and Northwestern’s 175.

Verhage and Will Howell led with a 39, followed by a 40 from Neal and a 42 from Thomas Knight.

Against Fort Mill and Lancaster, Nation Ford beat Fort Mill by one stroke, 159-160, and beat Lancaster by 20 strokes in their three-way match at the Fort Mill Golf Club.

The Falcons were led by Verhage’s 38, as he claimed medalist honors. Neal followed with a 40, as did Howell. Welliver rounded out the scoring for Nation Ford with a 41.

Fort Mill was led by Cory Brooks, who shot a 39. Graham Carter also shot a 39, while Andrew Blum shot a 40 and Corey Caudle shot a 42.

Against South Pointe and York at Spring Lake Country Club, the Falcons were within five shots of tying South Pointe, which shot a 163. York carded a 164 and Nation Ford had a 168.

Verhage led the Falcons with a 39 as Jack Burson had a 40. Howell shot a 43 and Neal shot a 46.

Nation Ford has a handful of matches left, only one of which is at home, before the region tournament. That one home match is Thursday against Clover.
