Middle school Yellow Jackets play way to baseball semis

Special to the Fort Mill TimesApril 19, 2013

— Zack Slone stood tall on the mound last night in the opening game of the 2013 York County Middle School Baseball Tournament.

An undermanned Springfield team would not go away easy as a young Fort Mill Middle School Yellow Jackets squad had to fight back from an early 5-2 deficit. It was Slone’s first trip to the mound this year for the Jackets. He pitched four and two thirds innings of economical relief tossing just 51 pitches. He lassoed the Mustangs and earned his first win of the year by consistently staying ahead in the count in the 9-5 victory.

Missing some starters, the young Jackets came together to break the game wide open with a six-run second inning. Contributing to the Jackets' offense were RBI singles by Reed Lilly and Jackson Bridges, while Nick Hoffman stole two bases and scored twice. Dylan Wright was hit by a pitch, walked, and scored twice.

Seven different Jackets were factors in the offense by scoring runs.

The Jackets move on to the semifinal game scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at York Middle School.
