Round 2, No. 44

Panthers pick:

April 26, 2013

Kawann Short

Height: 6-foot-3.

Weight: 299 pounds.

Position: Defensive tackle.

School: Purdue.

What he offers: Panthers GM Dave Gettleman described him as the best pass rusher in the defensive tackle class. He started 50 consecutive games for the Boilermakers.

Why he fits: Short is versatile enough to play both the 3-technique and nose tackle for the Panthers, who will have a rotation of no fewer than seven defensive tackles entering training camp.

Worth mentioning: Much like Thursday night, the Panthers wasted little time picking in the second round. Gettleman said Short was at the top of the team’s board when the pick rolled around.

Bet you didn’t know: At Central High School in Indiana, he joined current Orlando Magic guard E’Twaun Moore on the Class 4A state basketball title team in 2007.

What they’re saying: “He goes in the second round because he has a ton of talent. If that motor gets going, he’s got all kinds of upside.” – Mike Mayock, NFL Network.
