Berry up to the bar in Fort Mill

The 2013 S.C. Strawberry Festival Pageant queens were crowned Sunday night at Nation Ford High School as the town’s annual spring event kicked into a gear.

The event was hosted by Pageant Director Patti Mercer and Rance Adams, host of “Fox News Edge.”

The 2013 queens are Liza Walker, Teen; Halle Hillman, Miss; and Dana Boutwell, Mrs.

Prizes were also awarded to first runners-up Maria Teal, Teen; Sarah Margaret McGuirt, Miss; and Monika Zimmerman, Mrs.

Miss contestant Holly Hunt was recognized as the night’s “Sweetest Berry,” and Miss contestant Austen Phillips was the People’s Choice winner.

Winners of the South Carolina Strawberry Festival poster contest were also announced at the pageant.

The main events of the fourth annual South Carolina Strawberry Festival will take place May 3-4 in Walter Y. Elisha Park. The new queens will make their first appearance at the festival.

Beware of road closings

A portion of Hwy. 160 between Old Nation Road and McCammon Street in downtown Fort Mill will be closed from 5 p.m. Friday until midnight Saturday. Travelers not attending the festival are advised to use the truck route, around the Town of Fort Mill, to avoid delays.

During this period of time, expect traffic delays and congestion in the areas where Hwy. 160 meets I-77, Hwy. 21 and Gold Hill Road.
