Nation Ford Falcons claw way to 3rd round of tennis playoffs

— The Nation Ford Falcons boys tennis team fought their way to the third round of the 4A state playoffs after surviving a tough contest against TL Hanna 4-3.

Nation Ford will now play Spring Valley on the road in the third round with the hopes of landing in the Upper State championship May 9.

The match was forced to a rare No. 2 doubles match which saw the Falcons’ Chris Tapp and Jonathan Habbick win in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

Both No. 2 singles players Stephen Zoeller and No. 3 singles Chase Mahrlig stepped up their games to lead Nation Ford.

Zoeller won 6-1, 6-2 and Mahrlig won 6-3, 6-3. The only other singles winner was No. 5 David Habbick, who won 6-1, 6-2.

It was a bad night for No. 1 Madison Ott and No.4 Ben Herman. They both lost their individual matches. Later, the tandem lost their doubles match.

To get to the second round, the Falcons beat Region III foe Rock Hill 5-1.

Ott won in straight sets without giving up a game winning 6-0, 6-0. Mahrlig won 6-1, 6-2 and Herman also won without dropping a game, 6-0 6-0.

David Habbick won at No. 5 singles 6-1, 6-0 and Tapp and Jonathan Habbick teamed to win 6-2, 7-5 as the Falcons cruised to the win

Zoeller was the only one who lost in the Rock Hill match, falling in a third set tie breaker 6-3, 4-6, 5-10.
