FORT MILL — The fourth annual Luke Hoover Memorial 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk will begin at 10 a.m. May 25 on the Anne Springs Close Greenway to benefit the Luke Hoover Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors on the Nation Ford High Schools cross country team.
The 5K run is a challenging and scenic course on dirt and gravel hiking trails. The event also includes a one-mile walk around Lake Haigler. Awards will be given to the top male and female overall runners, top male and female master runners, top male and female in each age category, and special awards for the most spirited male and female runners.
Runners are encouraged to wear tie dye apparel and crazy, colorful socks just like Lude wore.
Luke Hoover was a 17-year-old senior at Nation Ford High School when he was killed in a car accident on Oct. 17, 2009. Luke was the kind of young man who reached out to those on the outside of the circle and made them feel a part of the team. He was a loyal friend and always had a word of encouragement for his fellow teammates.
Also a member of the NaFo wrestling team, he loved to run and his favorite place was the Greenway. Luke was an Eagle Scout, and made many of the wooden directional markers on the Greenway trails.
To honor Luke in a meaningful way, the Nation Ford Cross Country Team, along with the Hoover family and many friends, organized the Luke Hoover Memorial 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk a community event that includes everyone.
The races main goal is to raise scholarship money for NFHS seniors who have a passion for running, said Angie Hoover, Lukes mother.
All proceeds from the event benefit the Luke Hoover Memorial Scholarship Fund. Lukes parents award these scholarships to deserving Nation Ford cross country runners each year.
Its a time to get together with Lukes friends and new friends to remember that laughing, crazy, wide open little boy who always made everyone smile, said Hoover.
The Anne Springs Close Greenway is such a beautiful place and I know that Lukes spirit is there.
The entry fee is $25 for the 5K Run and $20 for the walk. Registrations made by May 15 include a race shirt. The entry fees increase $5 beginning May 16.
Race Day registration and Runner packet pickup begins at 8 a.m. May 25 on the Greenway. Online registration for the event is available at sportoften.com.
