FORT MILL TOWNSHIP — A taste of Wisconsin is coming to Fort Mill when Culvers opens June 3 on Carowinds Boulevard.
The restaurant features a few signature items, including Butter Burgers, a fresh burger made from Midwest-raised beef served on a lightly buttered bun. Frozen custard is another Culvers specialty, said Gus Sundermeier, who owns the Carowinds Boulevard location with wife Tricia and brother Mike. The restaurant is across the road from the Carowinds amusement park.
Frozen custard contains less air than other frozen soft-serve dairy treats and has a richer flavor than ice cream or frozen yogurt, Gus Sundermeier said. The store will offer both dine-in and drive-through service. Other menu offerings include a beef pot roast sandwich, cod dinner and fried chicken.
Sundermeier has been hard at work preparing for opening day. Already the store has hired nearly 100 employees.
Were really big on hospitality and serving the customer and it takes a lot of bodies to do that, he said.
Sundermeier is continuing to take applications online at culvers.com.
Originally from Chicago, Sundermeier and his family relocated to the Charlotte area to open the Culvers on Carowinds Boulevard. He was originally a businessman, working in commodity trading before teaching high school for 10 years, he said. Sundermeier said he missed working in business, but enjoyed mentoring young people. With Culvers, he said, he gets the best of both worlds.
To prepare for opening his own franchise, Sundermeier had to train for four months at Culvers headquarters, including four to five days a week of in-store training.
They are so good about training and hold to such a high standard, Sundermeier said. They do everything possible to make sure youre ready.
Culvers has 480 restaurants around the country. Sundermeier said he chose Fort Mill because of the strong schools.
It helps to have good local talent and families committed to the community, Sundermeier said.
Consistent population growth also played a factor, he said.
You see loads of people and young kids, and it makes me feel good about our future.
