Mother Nature throws curves at Post 43, but Fort Mill defeats Mill Hill

— If there was one thing that could stop Fort Mill Post 43 American Legion team this week it was Mother Nature.

Post 43 got rained out twice this week in games scheduled against Mint Hill and against Rock Hill. The Mint Hill game won’t be made up, but the Rock Hill Post 34 game will be rescheduled for later this season.

Fort Mill (4-2) did get one game in against another Mint Hill squad, winning 9-6.

Post 43 was led by Jake Windham on the mound and Chris Clare at the plate. Windham pitched just three innings, allowing one hit, while walking two and striking out two, as Fort Mill was able to get a comfortable 7-0 lead.

Windham led the game off with a double on the offensive side of things and would later score on a Clare RBI sacrifice, one of four RBIs he would have in the game.

Centerfielder Jaden Savage then knocked in Tyler Borland, who reached on a walk in the first inning, to give Fort Mill a 2-0 lead.

Post 43 came back to add three more runs in the bottom of the second as third baseman Josh Corley led the inning off with a single. Catcher Kody Flynn singled and Windham walked to load the bases before second baseman Brett Netzer drove in Corley with a sacrifice fly and Clare got Flynn home on an RBI single. Borland then doubled in Windham.

Fort Mill continued its offensive onslaught in the third inning as first baseman Connor Mull hit a solo home run to left field and Flynn scored again after walking to get on base, this time the easy way as Clare also walked to get on himself and pick up a third RBI of the game.

Despite its early struggles, Mint Hill would come back starting in the fourth inning with three runs on two hits and two walks off Jesse Horine, who came on in relief. However, Horine would get out of the inning with the help of a 4-6-3 double play.

Then in the top of the fifth, Mint Hill added three more runs off Hunter Smith in relief to make it 7-6.

However, Post 43 brought in Chris Cash to get the team out of a bases-loaded jam and he did, by striking out the side.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Fort Mill would get an important insurance run from Cash, who singled to get on and would score off an important double from Clare.

Fort Mill would add another run in the sixth as Corley sacrificed in Savage, who walked to lead off the inning giving Post 43 the 9-6 win.

Cash pitched three strong innings in relief to get the save, not allowing a hit or a run, while walking two and striking out seven.

Post 43 has this week off as the majority of the league takes time off due to Beach Week for most of the players.

The team returns to action June 17 against Rock Hill and June 18 against Lancaster, both home games at Fort Mill High that begin at 7 p.m.
