FORT MILL — Special to the Fort Mill Times
The Fort Mill Firecrackers U10 softball team finished second overall in the York County Recreation League U10 Softball Championships. The team was ranked third going into the playoffs with a 6-4 regular season record.
After defeating the Tega Cay Diamond Divas in the first round, the Firecrackers advanced to play the No. 2-ranked York Pink Panthers and won, qualifying for the title game. That’s where the girls’ streak came to end with a 7-5 loss to the No. 1 Clover Vipers.
“I am so incredibly proud of all of the girls on the team,” Coach Julie Drejka said. “They worked so hard this season and never gave up.”
Drejka praised all her players, but did single out several she felt deserved extra attention.
“It was truly a team effort but I do have to say that we couldn’t have done it without our star pitcher Kennedy Johnson,” Drejka said. “Kennedy never missed a game the entire season and worked hard keeping her composure during stressful situations. She has a very bright future ahead of her.”
Other standout players Drejka mentioned were catcher McLauren Sarvis, third baseman Lyric Smith and first baseman/backup catcher Mallory Roof.
The team’s most improved player of the year was newcomer Skyler Drejka.
