FORT MILL — Special to the Fort Mill Times
With summer officially underway and only five months left until basketball season, the Fort Mill and Nation Ford girls’ varsity teams are already hard at work. Both the Lady Jackets and the Lady Falcons participated in a county-wide Summer Basketball Shoot Out held Saturday at Clover High School in which each team played scrimmage matches against two different opponents.
The Lady Falcons also played in the Shoot Out held a second day at York Comprehensive High School while Nation Ford held a practice at home.
For basketball players in the summer, the biggest competition comes not from the opposition, but from themselves, coaches explain.
"In June it's not about the score,” Nation Ford coach Mike Smith said.
“It’s about playing together and playing hard. It's about getting to know your team mates. We are a young team. We have a lot of freshmen and I'm very proud of our ladies playing in their first varsity level competitions."
The Fort Mill girls also showed intense young energy on the court. Harnessing that energy and funneling it into a successful season will be a challenge that the Lady Jackets' new coach Brett Childers seems ready to handle.
"Summer stuff,” he said. “We're just trying to improve in certain areas. I think we did that."
