FORT MILL — A 7-3 loss to Clover Post 38 stopped a four-game winning streak for Fort Mill Post 43.
Fort Mill opened the week by beating Rock Hill in a rained shortened game 11-4, had a game against Lancaster rained out and the fell on the road to Clover.
Post 43’s record now stands at 5-3 on the season and 4-2 in League V play. Against Rock Hill, rain dampened the mood early on, but Fort Mill quickly struck once the game started.
Started Josh Corley went the short distance as the game was stopped in the fifth inning due to field conditions because of the rain, giving Post 43 the 11-4 win. Corley allowed four runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out five.
Up 1-0 in the third, Fort Mill added four runs on four hits as second baseman and recent UNCC committee Brett Netzer singled to start the inning off. Outfielder Tyler Borland would single as well and third baseman Josh Turner walked to load the bases before left fielder Tristan Broome hit a shot over the left field wall for a grand slam.
In the fourth, Post 43 added five more runs on three hits. First baseman Jake Windham doubled to start the inning and then shortstop Chris Clare provided a RBI single, as would Turner and Corley to push over more runs.
“Our team is hitting on all cylinders right now,” said head coach Tom Skula. “Tristan woke us up offensively with a grand slam and Josh pitched a heck of a ball game. When he got in trouble he showed the will to battle out of it. As long as we stay healthy and our travel ball players stay, we can make a run at the League V title.”
If Fort Mill makes a run, it will have to do so without having let downs like it had against Clover.
Post 43 made three errors in the field and grounded into four double plays in the 7-3 loss.
Borland pitched well through five innings allowing just four hits, but in the sixth inning, with two outs, Clover got to him as they rattled off three straight hits including back-to-back doubles, that put them up 2-0.
Fort Mill struck back in the top of the seventh to make it a one-run game as Turner would single and later knocked in on a sacrifice by Connor Mull.
However, that one run wasn’t enough because the momentum kept swinging in the bottom of the seventh as Clover added five more runs on five hits.
Two errors by Post 43 aided in the scoring of two of those runs, but the killer blow came off Chris Cash, who relieved Borland, as he gave up a three-run home run to Landon Harkey.
Post 43 can clinch the League V title over Lancaster next week, as both of them have two loses, but will have a busy week to do so. Fort Mill plays four games in five days including a doubleheader at Lancaster Post 31 Thursday.
