Indian Land Democrats support Voting Rights Act

Support for Voting Rights Act

WHEREAS, civic participation is the guiding principle and foundation to our democracy and where we firmly believe that our government is a “government of the people, by the people, for the people”; and

WHEREAS, the South has a shameful history of suppressing the right to vote through poll taxes, literacy test, and other humiliating methods; and

WHEREAS, the 1965 Voting Rights Act is under attack and must be preserved to ensure equality and fairness in our Electoral process

WHEREAS, our taxpayer dollars should be spent protecting, enhancing, and expanding the right to vote at all levels; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Indian Land Democratic Club fully supports H.R. 12 the Voter Empowerment Act of 2013 introduced by Congressman John Lewis on Jan. 23, 2013 and S. 123 the Voter Empowerment Act of 2013 introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand on Jan. 23, 2013.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we commit ourselves to educating our members on the importance of protecting and preserving Voting Rights and promoting civic engagement.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we will urge our elected officials to protect our sacred right to vote by urging them to support and pass the Voter Empowerment Act of 2013.
