LUGOFF — The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets ran through the Lugoff-Elgin Demons, gaining 305 yards on the ground as they were led by sophomore quarterback Rogan Wells in a 48-17 win Friday.
Wells rushed for 71 yards and went 7-10 for 117 yards passing the ball in his first varsity start, taking over the position from his brother Rylan, who graduated last year. Wells contributed five touchdowns – three on the ground and two in the air. Fort Mill was led by junior Malik Long on the ground as he gained 127 yards.
“For his first start, I’m happy,” said Fort Mill coach Ed Susi, referring to his young quarterback. “Those kids did a great job. I couldn’t be happier with our start.”
The Jackets opened the fourth quarter with Wells hustling off the right end for a 13-yard score. The score capped a five-play, 45-yard drive from Fort Mill as they continued to bulldoze Lugoff-Elgin.
Backup quarterback Taylor Hemphill got in on the action as well, scoring with about five minutes left in the game on a 14-yard run to put Fort Mill up 48-17.
Fort Mill came out sticking to its game plan in the third quarter, as it kept the ball on the ground with senior Deryan Sanders gaining big yardage with the help of a 27-yard run.
The Jackets were aided by two costly Lugoff-Elgin penalties, one of which was a personal foul as Wells took a late hit.
Wells shook off any effects for the hit and scored two plays later to extend Fort Mill’s lead to 28-10 in the third quarter.
Fort Mill’s defense seemed to get better as the game went on, swarming the Demons’ running backs. Senior Jesse Horine recovered a Lugoff-Elgin fumble caused by junior Josh Gast on the Demons’ second series of the third quarter and took it to the 15-yard line.
That set up another Fort Mill scoring drive as Wells hit junior tight end Mason Jordan for a nine-yard score.
The Demons shocked Fort Mill with an 80-yard kickoff return to the nine-yard line on the ensuing kick. That set up junior Daniel Quattlebaum for a nine-yard run to give Lugoff-Elgin its second touchdown of the game.
Fort Mill got a huge start in the second quarter as Sanders took a punt and returned the ball 38-yards to put the Jackets at the Demons 27-yard line to start the second quarter.
Long went to work for Fort Mill pounding the ball, before Wells followed senior Sam Smith into the end zone on seven plays to put Fort Mill up 6-0.
Fort Mill held Lugoff-Elgin on its next drive and got another good start on a punt. The Jackets then scored on three plays as Wells hit junior Brandon Plyler on a 62-yard strike down the right side of the field for the score. Junior Chandler Kryst converted the two-point conversion to put Fort Mill up 14-0.
Lugoff-Elgin came back and got on the board with the help of a 64-yard touchdown run from Quattlebaum as it faced a fourth and one from deep in its own territory.
Long bounced back with a big 70-yard touchdown sprint up the middle to extend Fort Mill’s lead on a short 79-yard, three play drive. Fort Mill was 6-for-7 on third down conversion in the first half.
With under a minute in the first half, Lugoff-Elgin scored on a 38-yard field goal from sophomore Andrew Place to make it 21-10.
Fort Mill is coming off a 7-5 year and a trip to the playoffs losing in the first round to eventual state champion Greenwood. Lugoff-Elgin was winless in 2012.
