Register by Sept. 16 for Fort Mill BBQ contest

September 6, 2013

— The Charlotte region’s best barbecue teams are invited to compete for prize money and bragging rights at the Fiddle n’ Pig Shindig on Sept. 20-21 at the Anne Springs Close Greenway.

Registration deadline is Monday, Sept. 16, and teams can win prizes ranging from $75 to $1,500. The competition is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society and part of the Greenway’s annual barbecue and bluegrass festival, which also features bands from across the region.

The two-day event begins Friday evening, Sept. 20, with the “Anything Butt” competition -- a chicken wing contest and sampling for visitors, as cook teams begin their overnight vigil of preparing their barbecue sensations.

Barbecue tastings begin mid-day Saturday, Sept. 21, with cook teams serving up Boston Butts and barbecue spare ribs for visitors and judges. A “People’s Choice” award also carries prize money.

Each cook team will be provided 10 eight-pound Boston butts and/or ten racks of spare ribs. Entry fee is $150 for the Boston Butt competition and $125 for the spare ribs showdown. Friday’s chicken wings contest is $15, and teams must provide their own wings.
