Jackets out-gunned by Blazers

— The Fort Mill football team controlled the game on paper early Friday night, but this particular game isn’t played on paper, and Ridge View was the one that came away with a 32-19 victory.

Fort Mill dominated the first half, controlling the ball more and gaining more total yards, but it was Ridge View that took a 15-7 lead into the locker room. The Blazers had eight penalties for 81 yards in the first half and gained just 51 total yards of offense.

The Blazers pulled it together in the second half and it was Fort Mill that struggled to put a game plan together as Ridge View outscored the Falcons 17-12.

“We couldn’t get into a rhythm,” said Fort Mill coach Ed Susi. “We just didn’t do the things we preached. It’s tough. We took some lumps. We will see how we respond.”

The Blazers opened the fourth quarter by going 44 yards and kicking a 23-yard field goal to extend their lead to 32-13 over the Jackets.

Fort Mill’s Chandler Kryst had a 71-yard kickoff return to get Fort Mill to the 17 yard line of Ridge View.

Junior Malik Long scored four plays later to keep things interesting for Fort Mill with just under eight minutes left in the game.

Ridge View came out moving the ball quickly, going no-huddle for its first series in the third quarter. That helped it push the pace as it went 55 yards in 14 plays to extend its lead. The Blazers picked up as many first downs on that drive – four – as they did in the first half.

Fort Mill went nowhere on its first drive and a bad snap put Ridge View at the Jackets’ 12-yard line. The Blazers scored on the next play as senior quarterback Terrell Fetterson hit junior Okechi Ntiasagwe for a touchdown.

The Jackets tried to rally by scoring on their next drive consisting of a Rogan Wells touchdown with the quarterback keeper from 11 yards out as Fort Mill ran the ball 10 times for 66 yards to take four minutes off the clock.

The Jackets kept pounding the ball to start the second half, and threw the occasional pass. Fort Mill did pick up one first down on the drive, passing the ball, but used its ground game to do most of the work.

The Blazers had luck on their side in the second quarter as even when they fumbled, they seemed to gain a yard. However, Ridge View struggled against the Jackets’ defense moving the ball.

Fort Mill did well in keeping the ball on the ground rolling to the corners, but struggled at times trying to go up the middle.

However, the Jackets’ running game kept Ridge sucking wind. The Jackets took advantage after a time out as Wells hit Long for a 19-yard touchdown pass. Long made the first Blazer miss and strolled into the end zone to put Fort Mill on the board.

Ridge View bounced right back with a 90-yard kickoff return from Marcus Reaster-Glover to put the Blazers back on top.

Fort Mill got great field possession with two minutes left in the half, starting at Ridge View’s 37. The Jackets were aided by penalties by the Blazers, pushing them to the 10. A bad snap and an incompletion forced Fort Mill to attempt a 34-yard field goal, which fell short.

Fort Mill opened the game running the ball. Wells attempted just three passes on the first drive, which Ridge View got called for pass interference, giving Fort Mill the first down.

The Jackets struggled to get to the red zone and went for a 37-yard field goal attempt that bounced off the left upright.

Ridge View struggled to move the ball and was forced to punt giving the Jackets good field possession to start their second drive of the game at the 47-yard line of the Blazers.

Wells was able to pick up a first down on the ground, but penalties put Fort Mill in a position where they had to pass. That led to Ridge View’s Daryl Shamlee picking off Wells and returning it to the Jackets 24-yard line.

Ridge View then scored five plays later to get on the board with just under a minute left in the opening quarter.
