Warriors make furious comback, but loose in 3 OT

Herald correspondentSeptember 16, 2013

The Indian Land Warriors almost challenged history. They almost came back from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to knock off the Lewisville Lions, who had dominated them for the past 20 football games, dating back to 1991.

In a triple-overtime thriller, Lions wide receiver Tony Gaston scored three touchdowns, including the decisive winner from four yards out, which cemented a 41-34 victory for Lewisville.

The game looked over early in the fourth quarter when Gaston’s second touchdown of the night, a 59-yard grab, put the Lions up by 21 over a hapless Warrior squad. Then, senior Indian Land quarterback George Morris found his groove. His 30-yard quarterback sneak set up dual scoring receptions by receivers Manny McCord (from 20 yards) and Brandon Sellers (from 21 yards) to tie the game with seconds left in regulation.

Both teams traded touchdowns in the second overtime period after stalemating the first before Gaston once again became a Lewisville hero. His catch, from a desperately scrambling Cody Montgomery, sealed the victory and the adulation from a loyal Lions fanbase.

Lewisville will play host for the third straight week against Buford High School on Friday, while Indian Land takes on the McBee Panthers at The Reservation. Indian Land has won the last three contests against the Panthers.
