Rushing touchdowns in each half by Nation Fords senior running back Marques Coleman sealed a conference victory away from home as the Falcons handled the Clover Blue Eagles 28-12 Friday night.
Coleman averaged more than 11 yards a carry against a Clover (0-5) defense that looked shaken rather than reassured by its recent bye week. Quarterback Dalton Helms (13-131 yards, 1 passing TD, 1 rushing TD) was able to pick apart the Blue Eagles secondary with ease on his sole passing touchdown of the night to Riley Hilton after two minutes. Twin rushes from Coleman in the first and third quarters saw Nation Ford (4-1) assemble a large lead.
Were learning how to overcome adversity, said Clover coach Chad Smith. Nation Fords a quality ball club, their kids are well coached and it was a hard fought match up.
Clovers leading running back LaDarius Adams was a consistent threat to Nation Fords defense, which had dropped over 34 points per game in recent weeks. His 27 rushes for 107 yards were in a losing effort, however, after failing to come up with points late in the second quarter. The Falcons put on an impressive four-down goal-line stand to keep Clover out of their end zone to enter the halftime break down by 13.
A 3-yard scoring rush by Andrew Bruce put the Falcons up by four unanswered scores late in the third quarter. Fortune shone on the Blue Eagles in the fourth when a Nation Ford fumble led to Clovers quarterback Scott Jackson converting from a yard out to give the home contingent something to smile about. After Nation Fords back-up quarterback Cole Martin led a 3-and-out, Clover also found a score through Chase Galant with seconds left. Galant accounted for 12 rushes for 36 yards on the night.
Nation Ford returns home for two big tests against next weeks foe, Lancaster (2-3) and South Pointe (4-1). Clover heads to the road to take on Rock Hill (1-4) in the hope to win their first game since 2011 against the Bearcats.
