FORT MILL — A little extra honey may be in the hive this year, because the Fort Mill High Lady Jackets tennis team has taken its game to another level.
Fort Mill improved to 9-2 on the season with a 6-0 win over South Pointe, and the team is sitting in third place in the Region III with a 6-2 record.
For head coach Angela Niccum, the successful season hasn’t come as a surprise.
“I felt pretty confident going into it,” Niccum said. “I felt like other teams underestimated us.”
One thing that Niccum said has helped her squad this season is their experience; despite their youth, these girls have been playing for a while. Take for example No. 1 singles player Rachel Brooks, who is just a freshman, but has been playing for the team the past three years.
Another thing Niccum stressed this year was conditioning.
“We have upped our conditioning and the girls are lasting longer in matches,” she said. “The work ethic is there this year.”
Against South Pointe, Brooks led the Lady Jackets, winning 6-3, 6-1. No. 2 singles Reagan Paff won 6-0, 6-0 and No. 3 singles Ellie Prain won 6-0, 6-1.
No. 4 singles Jessica Zahn won 6-3, 6-3 and No. 5 singles Matea Milojkovic won 6-1, 6-0. In No. 2 doubles, Mya Reeves and Jamie Davis won 6-0, 6-1.
Earlier in the week, Fort Mill beat Northwestern 4-2 with Paff winning in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 and Zahn winning 6-2, 6-1. Milojkovic also won 7-5, 6-4 and Reeves/Davis won in doubles 6-4, 6-1.
