Cougars’ pace too quick for Jackets York out-paces Fort Mill in high-scoring affair

Herald correspondentOctober 4, 2013

— Ranked No. 9 in the state and undefeated, the York Cougars had some business to take care of in their homecoming matchup against the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets. The two teams started off scoring at will against each other, before the Cougars’ defense stepped up and York ran away with at 56-24 win over Fort Mill.

York’s Kyron Schrouder lit up the scoreboard first with a 45 pass from Deshaw Andrews early in the first quarter. For a while the squads traded scores and it appeared the game was headed for a high scoring close game.

Though it has struggled at times this season, York’s defense buckled up in a big way against Fort Mill and held the Jackets to just 10 points after the first quarter. The final touchdown came in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter with many Cougars substitutes in the game and the game’s outcome long decided.

Meanwhile, the Cougars’ offense continued to roll. Ryan Moore ran for two touchdowns and 66 yards in the first half while the game’s outcome was still in doubt and added a third touchdown to help salt the game away. Moore finished with 97 yards and three touchdowns.

Cougars quarterback Deshaw Andrews had an outstanding night as. He threw for over 300 yards in the first half and finished the game with 332 yards and four touchdowns. Andrews spread the ball around to his receivers. Josh McCoy ended the night with 102 receiving yards and Daurice Simpson added 118. Markel Castle nearly became the fourth Cougar with 100 yards receiving, but he fell just short with 96.

“This was a nice win, anytime we have to change our defenses to face a spread offense like Fort Mill it is always a challenge,” said York coach Bobby Carroll. “We are very excited to be 6-0, but know we have a lot of work to do.

“Coach (Ed) Susi always has Fort Mill playing tough and tonight was no exception. They played extremely hard, we will just face the next challenge as it comes.”

Fort Mill returns home to face Rock Hill on Friday, while the Cougars travel to Lancaster to take on the Bruins.
