A recipe for purging

My husband and I were reading an article about getting rid of stuff. It suggested choosing one item a day and getting rid of it.

“That’s a great idea.” I exclaimed.

“It is,” agreed my husband. “Now, what do you want for dinner tonight?”

The thought of dinner never crossed my mind. I was busy checking out the sale papers. I mean, it was 10 o’clock on a Sunday morning. But according to my husband, it’s never too early to start thinking about meals. He loves talking about food, cooking food and eating food, especially on Sundays.

“Hey,” I shouted. “I know what we can get rid of ... cookbooks!”

I counted. There were 50. That’s a huge amount of cookbooks for a girl who doesn’t cook and a guy who conjures up most recipes in his head. I plucked a book from the shelf and handed it to my husband. “Here. ‘The Gas Griller Gourmet.’”

He flipped a few pages, nodded and in no time, we had our first discard. That is, until my husband said, “Look at this swordfish with niçoise sauce.”

It sounded good. We needed that cookbook. I snatched it and stuffed it back on the shelf.

“How about that ‘Light and Easy’ book?” he asked. “It’s one of those binder things.”

“You would pick that one. I have favorites in there.”

“Like what?” my husband inquired.

“Here, these Far East Crab Cakes,” I said proudly.

“They look good. When’s the last time you made those?”

“I don’t know. Maybe a couple of years ago.”

“That’s probably right,” my husband said with a snicker. “The book’s dated 1990.”

“I might make them again. Let’s keep it.”

“OK,” said my husband. “Then, how about that ‘Light and Natural’ book?”

“What do you have against the word ‘light?’” I asked.

“Nothing,.” he replied. “But isn’t it another word for ‘tasteless?’”

“Not always,” I answered confidently. “Here’s one. ‘The George Foreman Lean Mean Fat Reducing Grilling Machine Cookbook.’”

“Where’d we get that?” my husband sounded surprised. “ We don’t even have one of those machines. We’ve never had one.”

“My point exactly. We definitely don’t need this cookbook.”

Finally, we had our one item.

“All that looking at food made me hungry,” I grumbled.

“Me too,” agreed my husband. “Now, what do you want for dinner tonight?”
