At least it wasn’t a shutout.

Chesterfield’s senior quarterback Dillon Rivers tossed four touchdowns in a 38-3 rout of Indian Land on Friday night, but the Warriors can hold their heads high that they came away with points from their home encounter with the Rams. Chesterfield had held Indian Land scoreless the past five meetings dating back to 2006, but junior kicker Shea Rodgers ended that dreary streak with a 24-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

That was about the only positive takeaway for coach Michael Mayer’s side at the Reservation.

Sophomore receiver David Grant ran for two touchdowns and caught another to doom Indian Land to a three-game losing streak. Grant rushed into the end zone from two yards to put the Rams squarely on top after his 41-yard reception from Rivers opened the scoring.

Makhal Gaston and Chuck Jackson compounded Indian Land’s problems in the first half. While Chesterfield racked up over 270 first half passing yards, Warrior QB George Morris could only muster up 36 yards from his receivers.

Indian Land’s bright spot came after Manny McCord pulled in a 21-yard reception down the sidelines, the Warrior’s longest catch, to put Rodgers in position to boot his field goal home. A bobbled punt return by Chesterfield put the Warriors in a perfect situation to double their luck in the third quarter before Morris went 3-and-out and Rodgers missed wide left from 30 yards.

Grant’s third touchdown of the night, from 25 yards out in the fourth quarter, sealed up any hopes of a Warrior comeback.

Indian Land travels to Pageland Central next week to take on an Eagles’ team which defeated the Warriors 39-7 last year. Meanwhile, Chesterfield will make the trip to Andrew Jackson next week, where the Golden Rams won by 20 points over the Volunteers at home in 2012.
