MAC BANKS - SPECIAL TO THE FORT MILL TIMES

— The Nation Ford volleyball team dropped two critical games to Rock Hill and South Pointe last week, shifting the Lady Falcons into a fight for third in Region III-AAAA.

Nation Ford fell to Rock Hill 3-0 (20-25, 18-25, 16-25) and to South Pointe 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 22-25, 25-16, 13-15).

Lady Falcons head coach Carrie Christian described the loss to South Pointe as a “mental breakdown.”

“They fought hard and played hard, but made mental mistakes,” Christian said.

In the fifth set, South Pointe took over what had been a seesaw match by scoring four of the final five points to claim the win.

Nation Ford took wins in the first and fourth games, but dropped two straight in between.

The Lady Falcons came out strong in the first game and went up 14-10 forcing a timeout by South Pointe, which failed to correct its mistakes and continued to hit returns long as Nation Ford cruised to take the first set.

South Pointe made the necessary adjustments before the second game and went up 7-4 to start by playing more aggressive.

Nation Ford, with a record of 16-8-1 (7-3 in region play), struggled to put itself in position to return the ball and had shots drop in between players.

The Lady Falcons rallied some by scoring nine straight points after a timeout to trail by one at 21-20, but couldn’t get the win.

South Pointe started the third game just as strong as and went up 10-7. Nation Ford rallied to go up 14-12, but South Pointe again regrouped during a much needed timeout. South Pointe was able to take the lead after the timeout and held off the Lady Falcons to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Nation Ford came back in the fourth game to get the win, but again had to fight from behind to make a game of it. At one point the Lady Falcons scored seven straight points to rally from down 14-10 to 17-14.

From there, the Lady Falcons would close things out by scoring eight of the final 10 points.

Nation Ford also fell to Dorman recently, while beating Marvin Ridge in a three-way match at home.

The Lady Falcons now face a tough Northwestern squad this week on the road, as well as taking on York at home.
