Falcons’ defense couldn’t mach offense

— The defensive struggles for Nation Ford continued this week as York plowed through them for a 66-24 win to scoring 49 unanswered points.

Led by senior Ryan Moore, who rushed for 241 yards and two touchdowns, York’s second half performance overshadowed a 410 yard passing performance by Nation Ford quarterback Dalton Helms and a 220-yard receiving performance on 11 catches by the Falcons’ Brandon Cureton.

York quarterback Dashaw Andrews had a pretty good game as well throwing for six touchdowns while going 19-27 for 292 yards.

York exploded in the second half for 35 points to cruise to the win.

Both teams stopped the other on its initial drives to open the second half. However, York regrouped on its second trip down the field and Moore scored to extend the Cougars’ lead on a seven-play drive starting on the Falcons’ side of the field.

The Cougars’ defense seemed more aggressive in the second half, pressuring Helms more often and getting to him on many occasions.

Moore continued to dominate in the second half as scampered up the middle for a 44-yard touchdown to make it 45-24. Right before the end of the third quarter, Andrews connected with Kyron Schrouder for another touchdown, their third of the game, on a 42-yard score to unofficially close the book on the game, despite another quarter left to play.

Helms and Nation Ford came back picking up huge chunks of yards through the air to move the ball as he connected with Riley Hilton for 32 yards and Cureton for 22 yards on the drive. Helms and Hilton would connect for a four-yard score to put the Falcons back on top 17-10 on the 10 play, 80-yard drive.

York answered right back as Andrews led the Cougars on a seven play drive connecting with Schrouder for an 11-yard touchdown. The drive was aided by a 27-yard grab from Markel Castle.

Nation Ford was able to figure out York’s secondary often as Helms and the Falcons came right back and scored when the senior quarterback hit Cureton for a 86-yard score to make it 24-17.

Nation Ford came out of the gate firing as Helms completed his first five passes, four of which went to Cureton. Helms would then connect for the first score of the game with none other than Cureton on a 26-yard pass lofted to the right side of the end zone. Helms went 6-7 on the drive for 91 yards.

York had a good drive going on the next possession until a fumble gave the ball back to Nation Ford.

On the next drive, Nation Ford tried to get something started on the ground, but the York defense was daunting. Seeing that that wasn’t working, Helms went back to the air and moved the ball better, hitting receivers over the middle. However, the Falcons had to settle for a 26-yard field goal from kicker Caleb Bruckner.
