— Wade Havnaer, 11, of Tega Cay won the U.S. INT National Water Ski Championship during the Oct. 10-12 competition.

Wade, who attends Gold Hill Middle School, spent his summer practicing on the slalom course and routinely hits the water at 6 a.m. during the school year to get some practice in before classes begin. He competed in the S.C. INT Water Ski Tour over the summer and qualified to represent the Palmetto State in the U.S. competition in Bakersfield, Calif.

He completed the three required passes in first place heading into the finals, and though he was initially in the Junior division for competitors 13 and younger, Wade was moved into the Adult class and skied last out of the four contestants in the finals. His flawless 32 mph turn on the final buoy was all he needed to take the trophy.
