FORT MILL — A man was chased by witnesses after hitting several cars in the downtown Fort Mill area Thursday night, according to a police report.
Fort Mill Police Department spokesman Bryan Zachary said the suspect, identified as Joseph McGuigan, 22, of 120 E. Hill St., Fort Mill, collided with vehicles near the corner of Clebourne and White streets and Confederate and Main streets “and then fled on foot.”
One of the cars allegedly struck by McGuigan was parked, but occupied by the driver, one of the victims said. The driver of the car that was struck was among those who chased and detained McGuigan, the man said.
McGuigan is charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident. He is accused of running from the scene before being chased by people nearby who saw the incident, according to the report.
Jason Baker, a Fort Mill resident headed to dinner at Local Dish, said he was one of the people who chased McGuigan. Baker and others caught McGuigan near Hardee’s, Baker said, where he was taken into custody by police.
“He started a big sob story, to please let him go, and we called 911 and the police came,” Baker said.
McGuigan was not able to complete a field sobriety test, according to the police report, but did provide a breath sample, which showed a .18 percent blood alcohol concentration. The legal limit in South Carolina is .08 percent.
