FORT MILL — The Nation Ford Falcons wrestling team continues to improve, winning two of three matches recently and are in the hunt for the final playoff spot out of Region III.
The Falcons beat Chester 54-30 in a nonregion match and then split region matches with York and Clover. Nation Ford is 2-3 in the region with matches to come against Northwestern and Fort Mill.
The Falcons are looking to secure its first ever dual playoff berth in the sport. They are in a battle with York for the fourth spot in the region standings.
Nation Ford beat Clover 33-28, clinching the win on a decision by 132-pound Elliot Wallace, who came from behind in the third period to win 7-3 after trailing 3-2.
The Falcons went up 12-0 early after getting wins from Michael Allen (138) and Houston Vandiver (145). Clover won the next two matches by decision, while Nation Ford extended its lead to 18-6 with a pin fall win from Justin Ettell at 170 pounds.
Clover won the next four matches, excluding a forfeit win for Nation Ford’s Major Strait at 195 pounds to make the score 24-23.
From there, Collin Godbout took a forfeit win for Nation Ford at 120 pounds to make it 30-23, but again the Blue Eagles closed the gap, setting up the decisive 132-pound match.
Nation Ford wrestled well early against York, but struggled down the stretch before losing 51-18.
“We got to learn to finish matches,” said Falcons’ head coach Leon Boulware. “We have to put matches together. We are stronger down low in our lower weights. Our lower weights are carrying us now.”
York went up 9-0 to start the match, but Nation Ford quickly came back to tie the match at 9-9 with wins from Vandiver (145) and Robert Land (152). From there, York would win seven straight matches to go up 45-9 before the Falcons got wins from TJ Giarratana (113) and Godbout (120).
In its nonregion win over Chester, Nation Ford got wins from Jeremy Kishbaugh (106), Giarratana (113), Benjamin Crite (120), Godbout (126), Wallace (132), Allen (138), Vandiver (145), Land (152), and Brady Hensley (195).
