Girls on the Run registration begins Jan. 27

From staff reportsJanuary 21, 2014

Girls on the Run of the Tri County, presented by Piedmont Medical Center, is gearing up for its spring season. Registration opens Jan. 27. The spring season opens on Feb. 24 and finishes with the Girls on the Run 5K on May 10.

GOTR is an after school program that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games and discussing important issues, girls learn to celebrate being themselves. The program focuses on building self esteem and improving emotional and physical health. Lessons are designed to enhance the social, mental, physical and emotional health of preteen girls. During the 20 sessions, girls are empowered with a greater self awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, contented and self confident young women.

A team of volunteers represents a dynamic group of women, including teachers, athletes, businesswomen, and mothers – all of whom possess a great enthusiasm for helping to prepare girls for a healthy and happy adolescence and adulthood. Volunteer opportunities are still available for coaches and assistant coaches.
