FORT MILL — The Fort Mill High School dance team the first Jacket Dynasty Dance Camp at the school for kids ages 6-14 during the recent long weekend.
Campers were invited to perform with the dance team during halftime at Fort Mill’s varsity basketball games Jan. 21.
“Since today was a teacher workday and so many of our supporters are teachers, we decided to do something to help them out – those people with kids who needed child care today – as well as supporting our program, getting kids in here to hopefully become future members of the dance team,” said coach Liz Dukes, who has taught at Fort Mill High for 11 years and coached the dance team for 10.
The camp will also help the team get closer to national competition.
“We are raising money to go to Cheer Sport National Competition in February, so all of our fundraising this year has been pushed to that. The Cheer Sport National Competition we’re going to is in Atlanta. It’s a long weekend in February. This will be our first time,” she said.
The team decided they wanted to try something new this year.
“We have competed with Universal Dance Association for many years. We’ve done their Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic, we did their national competition three years ago now when these seniors were freshmen. It was awesome, but we just decided to do something different,” Dukes said. “We’re doing Atlanta and we’re going to do some fun things while we’re there, too.”
