TEGA CAY — The Springfield Middle School eighth grade boys' basketball team defeated Gold Hill Middle 55-29 to run the Mustangs' record to 8-0.
After turnovers cost the Bulldogs (1-4) early on, they were able to hold their own with the help of leading scorer Austin Weisenger and trailed by six after the first quarter.
But the second quarter was all Mustangs. With better post play and smoother transitions, Springfield outscored Gold Hill 17-2.
The second half showed Springfield had the upper hand with cleaner passes and size, outscoring Gold Hill by 14 in the third. Gold Hill did play better in the fourth quarter, getting the most from its offensive rebounds and outscoring Springfield 15-6, but the game was already out of reach.
Springfield worked the ball more fluently and took advantage of their size, said Gold Hill basketball coach Ed Davis.
It's an advantage Davis says he thinks his team will have in its next game, against Oakridge.
We need to continue stressing what we have been doing all season long and take advantage of our size against Oakridge, he said.
