— Blistering cold and wind hampered the Fort Mill Lady Jackets soccer team, but not enough to stop a 4-0 win over Northwestern.

Ranked third in the state and 9-1-1 on the season, the Lady Jackets have allowed just two goals in 11 games. The team’s only loss was 1-0 to Lake Norman as part of the Fort Mill Invitational.

Four Fort Mill players scored goals against Northwestern. The Lady Jackets took 18 shots on goal and had nine corner kicks in the win.

Defensively, Lady Jackets keeper Sam Whitley had two saves as Northwestern struggled to get past the Fort Mill line.

Fort Mill scored about 20 minutes into the game as freshman Alexis Williams fed senior Libby Dewey for the goal.

The Lady Jackets added another goal before the end of the first half as junior Cat Casey fed junior Graydon Nall on the goal at 30:28 in the game.

Fort Mill coach Ryan Morris said he knows his team can play better than it did against Northwestern and needs to keep improving as the season progresses.

“I don’t think we played up to our standard,” he said. “We were a step or two behind. We weren’t closing as much as we normally do and offensively it was too slow and methodical.”

The Lady Jacketsplayed better in the second half, getting more looks at the goal and taking more than double the number of shots it did in the first half.

Northwestern held strong in goal for most of the game, but with about seven minutes left, junior Madison Blaschke found senior Cassidy Parker for the Lady Jackets’ third goal of the game. The scoring wasn’t done for Fort Mill despite the comfortable 3-0 lead as sophomore Alyssa Smith scored unassisted with about a minute to go in the game.

“I have seen us play better than this,” he said. “I have seen us play quicker and we need to stay at that level. They know they weren’t playing up to standard.”

Fort Mill heads into this week with two more Region III games scheduled against Clover and South Pointe.
