Fort Mill dominates host Nation Ford in track meet

— The Fort Mill boys’ and girls’ track teams beat cross-town rivals Nation Ford head-to-head last week.

While both schools traded wins in the events, Fort Mill came out on top in both the boys’ and girls’ standings. The Fort Mill boys won 85-55 and the girls won 90-47.

The Fort Mill track program has its third head coach in three years and is trying to get things running smoothly this year. Former coach Steve Mullinax retired in 2012 after 36 years and a career record of 479-50.

“Things are coming together each time we compete,” said coach Frank Ambrose. “We get better each time. We are always looking to do our best. The kids have done a heck of a job and are working hard.”

Fort Mill won 21 of 34 events at the meet, held at Nation Ford March 31. The team won three of the six relay events, including the girls’ and boys’ 4x100 and the boys’ 4x800 events.

Individuals winning for the Jackets were:

Alex Farfare – girls’ pole vault

Deaton Grant – boys’ pole vault

Diana Burden – girls’ discus and shot put

Justin Torbush – boys’ discus

Myra Tall – girls’ long jump

Deryan Sanders – boys’ long jump and 200-meter dash

Sarah Felkner – girls’ triple jump

Arianna Grevious – girls’ high jump

Zach Riley – boys’ high jump and 400-meter dash

Mary Watson – girls’ 100-meter hurdles

Chandler Kryst – boys’ 110-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash

Evelin Siska – girls’ 400-meter hurdles

Melissa Smith – girls’ 3,200-meters

Jeremy Ricks – boys’ 3,200-meters

Nation Ford won the girls’ 4x800 relay and both of the 4x400 relays. Individual winners for the Falcons were:

Miles Cargile – boys’ shot put

Garvin Dean – boys’ triple jump

Polly Goss – girls’ 1,600-meters and 800-meters

Will Manning – boys’ 1,600-meters and 800-meters

Kiera Andrews – girls’ 100-meters and 200-meters

Kevin Watson – boys’ 400-meter hurdles

Zippy Lincoln – girls’ 400-meters

Fort Mill also fell in a close meet with Rock Hill later in the week. Individual winners for the Jackets were:

Diana Burden – girls’ discus

Chandler Kryst – boys’ 110-meter hurdles and triple jump

Michael Pearson – boys’ 400-meter hurdles

Anika Myers – girls’ shot put

Deryan Sanders – boys’ long jump
