Gray accepted in to West Point

Rebecca J. Gray of Bluffton, formerly of Fort Mill, was accepted to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Gray is the daughter of Timothy M. Gray and Jody McDade Gray of Bluffton, granddaughter of John R. and Jean McDade, and the great-granddaughter of Frances N. King, all of Fort Mill.

In May, she is scheduled to graduate from Bluffton High School, where she is the Battalion Commander for the Bluffton High School JROTC. Gray attended elementary school at Crowders Creek Elementary in Lake Wylie and Orchard Park Elementary in Fort Mill. The prospective members of the class of 2018 will report to West Point for the first time on July 2.

Holt makes dean’s list

Carrie E. Holt of Fort Mill made the “A” dean’s list at Wagner College in New York. Students must attain a 4.0 grade-point average for the semester to that the list.

Fort Mill FFA chapter competes

Ben Ruddy, Stewart Ruddy, Victoria Beale and Missy McConnell of Fort Mill High School came in third place in the state at the S.C. Future Farmers of America Dairy Cattle Evaluation and Management Career Development Event.

The event develops students’ skills in observation, analysis and evaluation and educating future industry leaders in agricultural business management, economics and leadership.

Sugar Creek Elementary 1st for yearbook

Sugar Creek Elementary School won first place in a national yearbook contest sponsored by Lifetouch Yearbooks. The school was judged on theme and creativity. Principal Michelle Gritz and Yearbook Adviser Leanne Schism were presented with a certificate and $300 from Lifetouch Yearbooks.

Deadline for art competition

The deadline for entries for the 5th District Congressional Art Competition is noon Friday, April 11.

Scholarship available

The York County Democratic Women’s Council is offering two $1,000 scholarship awards in memory of Bessie Moody-Lawrence. She was a professor of education at Winthrop University and served in the S.C. House from 1993-2008. She tackled issues that affected children, teachers, women and the poor. The scholarship is open to any graduating high school senior.
