Pro wrestling to spice up Fort Mill’s S.C. Strawberry Festival

— Pro wrestling has been added to the town’s annual S.C. Strawberry Festival.

Wrestling stars from the 1980s and ’90s are scheduled to attend the Strawberry Festival, now its fifth year and voted the best in the state last year. The starts will appear as part of the Wrestling for a Reason show to raise money the American Cancer Society.

The festival began Friday with the Miss S.C. Strawberry Pageant and continues through Saturday. The main event is May 2-3 at Walter Elisha Park.

Among the pro wrestlers scheduled to appear are WWE Hall of Famer “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan, The Rock n’ Roll Express’ Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson and former WWE superstar The Barbarian.

Other notables include “Big Country” Robert Ordway, a Fort Mill resident, and “Junk Yard Dog” Deon Johnson. Wrestling matches will take place in a ring under the American Air Heating and Cooling tent.

“It’s going to be an awesome event,” said Chad Adams, owner of American Air, which is sponsoring the event.

There will be six opportunities Friday and Saturday to meet the wrestlers and take photos6 and 8 p.m. May 2 and noon, 3, 5, and 8 p.m. May 3. There is a fee to take a photo.

Autographed wrestling and sports memorabilia will be included a raffle. The prizes will be displayed inside of the American Air Heating and Cooling tent, with the winning ticket will be drawn at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Adams said that if the event is successful, he hopes to continue it next year.
