FFA students host ‘farm to fork’ dinner in Fort Mill

— The public is invited to a “Farm to Fork” dinner hosted by Nation Ford High School Future Farmers of America students at 6 p.m. May 13 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 130 Tom Hall St., Fort Mill.

All food served at the dinner will be grown, produced, and prepared from area farmers.

“It’s not only our way of thanking and recognizing those farmers who provide fresh items for our nourishment, but hopes to bring awareness of the importance of the farmers’ role in our everyday life,” said parent volunteer ReJeanna Haiderer.

“Our (FFA) chapter consists of 40 young high school students who have an intent interest in the field of agriculture studies. These members and the chapter officers will host the dinner, introduce the farmers as well as highlight their contribution to our event,” Haiderer said.

Most of the farms participating are in western York County, but two are local Farm To Fork contributors – Springs Farm and Tega Hills Farm. 

Lee C. Petitgout, agricultural education instructor and FFA adviser, said her students not only learn about growing food, but use other disciplines as well, including engineering and science.

“Really, who were the first chemists,” Petitgout said. “Farmers!”

Many agricultural and FFA students get experience in high school that helps prepare them for careers, college or both, Petigout said. Recently, the Nation Ford FFA chapter helped train piglets for last weekend’s S.C. Strawberry Festival pig races.
