Fliers like this one have been placed in mailboxes in Rock Hill and Fort Mill, but were not authorized by the school district. Officials have no idea who is soliciting these donations or where these donations are going.

Area residents should be wary of fliers placed in local mailboxes requesting donations for the "Back the Pack" nutrition program, school officials said Thursday.

Several people have called area school districts over the last few weeks because of fliers requesting that people leave items like raisins, juice boxes and pudding cups at their mailboxes, to be picked up on a specified date.

But no district organization – including schools, support organizations or student groups – got approval for the fliers, Rock Hill schools spokeswoman Elaine Baker said, and the district does not know who is collecting these donations or where they’re going, because no school has received any additional donations.

A neighborhood in Fort Mill most recently received a batch of these fliers, with a scheduled pick-up date for Saturday. This latest flier also includes incorrect information, stating “PTO diligently works to keep this program a success in our area schools and hopes to help out child (sic) during the summer break.”

While the district does solicit donations for the Back the Pack program, which provides students with food over the weekends, it does not operate during the summer months.

Anyone who wishes to donate to Back the Pack or has questions or concerns is encouraged to contact their local elementary or middle school, or the district office at 803-548-2527.
