FORT MILL — The visiting fifth-ranked Dorman Lady Cavaliers scored two unanswered goals in the second half to knock the third-ranked Fort Mill Lady Jackets out of the third round of the 4A girls’ soccer playoffs with a 3-1 win Friday.
The Lady Jackets fell one win from the Upper State title game.
“It wasn’t our night,” said Fort Mill head coach Ryan Morris. “That is how soccer is. When you get opportunities, you have to put them away.
“I am very proud of how our girls played.”
Neither team seemed able to gain control for much of the second half, as they traded possession. Dorman double- and triple-teamed the ball on potential Fort Mill breakaways, halting the Lady Jackets’ chances of clean looks at the goal.
The Lady Cavs broke a 1-all tie on a throw-in with about 26:30 left in the game, as sophomore midfielder Allie Cardew got into the position she needed to catch Fort Mill keeper Samantha Whitley off guard and sneak a shot into the left side of the net.
Fort Mill had a good chance with about 22 minutes left in the game as a shot by McKenzie Davis almost got past Dorman keeper Amelia Miles.
The Lady Jackets’ passing got better in the second half, but the Dorman defense continued to be a stubborn obstacle. Fort Mill also had a penalty kick with about 14 minutes left but failed to convert its best opportunity of the second half.
Dorman iced the game with about 10 minutes left, when senior Kayla McMillian scored her second goal of the game after catching Whitley out of position.
The first goal was scored on Dorman’s first attempt, when McMillian scored less than three minutes in.
Fort Mill tried to rebound offensively and started to control possession, but the Lady Cavs’ defense was too strong. Dorman anticipated and intercepted the Lady Jackets’ passes.
About 12 minutes into the first half, the Lady Jackets’ Olivia Thompson was run over and came out of the game favoring her right knee. The game became rough for both squads, as Dorman freshman Morrison Trnavsky left with an injury with about 21 minutes left in the first half.
About midway through the first half, Fort Mill senior Bailey Rich scored after Miles came out of the box and was caught out of position, allowing Rich to knock the ball in during a scrum.
Despite that goal, Dorman continued to beat Fort Mill to the ball, especially in the middle of the field.
