CLOVER — After rallying to win the first game, the Fort Mill Post 43 American Legion baseball team dropped the second game to Clover Post 38 to split a doubleheader Saturday.
Fort Mill won the first game 7-5 and fell 12-2 in the second game. Post 43 is now 5-2 overall and 3-2 in League V.
In game one, Post 43 used a six-run sixth inning with the help of six walks by Clover pitchers to rally after being down 4-0. Until the sixth inning, Fort Mill had one hit off Clover starter Barrett Courtwright.
In the sixth inning, second baseman Justin Borland singled to start the inning and Jake Windham walked. Starting pitcher Josh Jones, who went 2-4 with an RBI, singled in Borland, before Jaden Savage walked. Catcher Justin Tepper walked to get an easy RBI and Alex Endler walked as well before Grant Fry singled in Tepper. Borland came back up and walked again to score Endler, making it 6-4.
Clover added a run in the bottom of the sixth to close the gap, but Post 43 got one in the top of the seventh for some insurance as Endler singled in Jones, who singled to lead off things for Fort Mill.
Jones got the win on the mound going five and two-thirds innings and allowing four runs on 11 scattered hits. He struck out six in the process without walking a batter.
Josh Corley got the save going one and a third innings, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out three.
Game 2: First inning blitz
In the second game, Cole Avery got the start for Fort Mill and Clover got to him quickly as he allowed five runs in the first inning on three hits.
After the first inning, Avery settled down, but the Post 43 bats struggled to keep pace. Fort Mill scored a run in the second inning as Endler led things off with a single. Jordan Helms then singled, as did Corley. Windham drove Helms in to give Post 43 its first run of the game.
Fort Mill’s bats stalled for the next two innings as Clover came around again in the fourth and scored seven runs on four hits between Avery, Tepper and Windham, who all pitched in the inning.
Post 43 added a second run in the top of the fifth as Scott Richi singled and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Jones.
Fort Mill has four games in three days this week. The team start things off by making up a rain out against Rock Hill Tuesday. They then host a doubleheader against Clover at home Wednesday and travel to Lancaster Thursday.
