— It took overcoming a five run deficit in the last at bat and an extra inning, but when the dust settled the Tega Cay Coach Pitch All-Stars defeated Greenville 8-7 July 3 to win the South Carolina Little League State Championship in Irmo.

The All-Stars earned its berth to the state tournament by going undefeated and winning the District 8 tournament held two weeks earlier in Chester. Tega Cay defeated its District 8 opponents by a combined score of 49-11.

At the state tournament, Tega Cay went 4-1 in pool play, defeating its opponents by an average score of 14-4. Tega Cay had to defeat the host team from Irmo in the semifinal to advance to the final game against the defending champions from Greenville.

Greenville jumped on Tega Cay early and built what appeared to be a commanding 7-2 lead going into the bottom of the final inning. However, the All-Stars from Tega Cay scored five runs to tie the game at 7-7, sending the game to extra innings. Three of the five runs were scored with two outs. Tega Cay held Greenville scoreless in the top of the extra inning and in the bottom of the extra inning, Tega Cay got a runner to third base with two outs and got a walk-off hit to win the championship.

The Coach Pitch All-Star team consists of 8 year olds from Tega Cay, Fort Mill and Rock Hill.
