Howell Represents NFHS
Lauren Howell, a junior at Nation Ford High School, has been chosen to represent her school at the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in Boston, July 13-22. She will join other scholars from across the country that demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and an interest in a career in medicine.
White to attend USCG Academy
Nathaniel David White of Fort Mill has accepted an appointment to attend the U.S. Coast Guard Academy as a member of the Class of 2012. A student at Fort Mill High School, White is the son of David and Jennifer White of Fort Mill and the grandson of Richard and Lorraine White of The Villages, Fla., and Joseph and Joan Ormond of Aracata, Calif., and Hugh and Ciry Null of Chiloquin, Ore.
Academic team in Windy City
Last Friday the Fort Mill High School Academic Team traveled to Chicago for the National Academic Quiz Tournament High School National Championship.
Fort Mill finished the regular season with 21 wins and qualified for
the NAQT nationals with its strong placements at two different NAQT events - one in S.C. and another in N.C. One hundred and seventy-six teams from 35 states and two American schools from Canada and China compete for the title.
The tournament makes no distinctions among types of schools. Fort Mill competes against public, private, magnet, Governor's, charter, and parochial schools. Fort Mill and Dorman high schools represent the state.
This is Fort Mill's sixth trip to NAQT nationals since 2000. The 2007-08 Fort Mill Academic Team members are Michelle Cote, Ryan Gustafson, Caleb Klipowicz, Daniel Koverman, Kevin Loeper and Noah Nguyen.
Pettit graduates with honors
Timothy Charles "Chase" Pettit graduated from Clemson Univer-sity Calhoun Honors College on Friday, May, 9. Pettit, the son of Tim and Amy Pettit, graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in computer engineering and has been accepted into Clemson's Ph.D program. He will pursue his master's and doctorate degrees in the fall.
A graduate of Fort Mill High School, he is the grandson of Dale and Jerry Cook of Lonestar, Catherine Pettit of Gaffney and the great-grandson of Mary Cook of Loretto, Tenn.
FMHS boosters selling bricks
The FMHS choral boosters are conducting a brick legacy patio fundraiser for names to be etched in history.
The 4x8 bricks are $50, and 8x8 bricks are $75, with bricks inscribed the way you want them, including the school Yellow Jacket or another logo (if e-mailed). Special needs screenings offered
The Fort Mill School District will be conducting a screening clinic for children aged 3 to 5 who are suspected of having special needs. Hearing, vision, speech-launguage, and development will be screened. The clinic dates are June 24-26. To arrange an appointment, call Cynthia Yocum at 548-8358.
Brathe, Middleton on Dean's List
Ryan T. Brathe, a freshman from Fort Mill and Mylanda Joy Middleton, a sophomore from Fort Mill, both made the Dean's list at Newberry College.
Ballance on President's List
Melissa Ballance of Fort Mill made the President's List at Coastal Carolina University . To qualify, students must earn a 4.0 grade-point average and be enrolled full time.
