School registration dates set

Registration dates for new and existing Indian Land students are:

• Indian Land Elementary will register new students and kindergarten students from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. July 29-30. Returning students will have teacher assignments mailed to their homes.

• Indian Land Middle will register new students to the school district from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. July 29. Registration for returning students will be 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 5-6.

• Indian Land High will hold registration, schedule pick-up and class pictures from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 5 for seniors and 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 5 for juniors, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 6 for sophomores, and 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 6 for freshmen.

All new students must bring two proofs of residency, Social Security card, birth certificate and immunization records.

Martoccia earns Cadet award

Cierra Martoccia, 18, a former teacher cadet at Fort Mill High School, is one of four recipients of the the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention and Advance-ment Teacher Cadet scholarship.

Martoccia was actively involved in Key Club and Beta Club and was secretary of the Project Care Club before graduating from Fort Mill High School in June. She has danced at Center Stage Dance Academy for four years. She plans to attend Winthrop University, where she will major in middle school education. Her Teacher Cadet instructor was Anne Ledford.

The $1,000 one-time scholarships are awarded each year to as many as four senior teacher cadets who intend to become a classroom teacher in one of South Carolina's public schools. Awards are determined based on the merits of scholarship, teacher recommendation and a written essay.

Teacher with FM roots gets award

Blair Power, a first-year teacher at Greenville Middle Academy in Greenville, was named GMA Teacher of the Year by the school's PTA.

Powers, who is originally from Fort Mill, won over the PTA because of her extensive involvement in school clubs, activities and functions, and her commitment to work with the PTA and parents of her students.

Nguyen, Segarra head to Charleston

Recent Fort Mill High School graduates Noah Nguyen and Gabriel Segarra received $1,000 scholarships as part of a statewide scholarship program sponsored by the Ronald McDonald House Charities of North Carolina. The program offers scholarship money to high-achieving students who are furthering secondary education.

Nguyen was a member of traveling academic team, FBLA and Beta Club and had a 4.1 grade-point average. He will attend The College of Charleston.

Segarra attended programs for students interested in medicine and participates in band and percussion ensemble and had a 3.7 grade-point average. He will also attend The College of Charleston and plans to become a medical doctor.

Guzman wins scholarship

Recent Fort Mill High School graduate Katrine Guzman has been awarded the North Greenville University Crusader Fellows Scholarship. Guzman plans to attend NGU in the fall. She is the daughter of Jorge and Heidi Guzman.

The Crusader Fellows Scholarship covers the full cost of tuition, room and board. It is awarded to students who were recognized as Palmetto Fellows by the S.C. Commission on High Education and complete an interview with the scholarship committee.

Carolan earns master's degree

Kelly Anne Carolan of Fort Mill recently earned a master's degree in speech-language pathology from the University of Northern Colorado.
