Indian Land High School students perused new books, designed PowerPoint slides about the fun of reading and designed reading-themed T-shirts to show off their love of reading during Teen Read Week.

The week was full of events designed to draw students into the media center, said Media Specialist Elizabeth Ashley. The theme of the week was "Books with Bite," and Ashley drew from that theme to create food-related fun.

During the week, students baked cookies and gave them creative names based on their favorite books, such as "Harry Potter's Magical Morsels." At the end of the week, a nachos party was held for all of the students who were caught reading during the week.

Haley Vauchon enjoyed the first day of Teen Read Week, when students were invited to the media center to see the newest books to arrive in the library. She's already chosen one, "Looking for J.J." by Anne Cassidy as a must-read.

"I really like reading and I was excited to see how many new books were coming out," Vauchon said.

Since moving into the new, larger media center at the new Indian Land High School last year, Ashley said that she has really focused on programs such as Teen Read Week.

The students enjoy the programs, she said, and it gives her a chance to show them what the library has to offer.

"We moved to a new space, it's bigger, and we really drove home the programs last year," Ashley said. "It's a good way to pull students into the media center that don't usually visit."

Her plan is working.

Student Corey Reid said that he visited the media center several times last year because of Ashley's creative programs.

This year, he's one of the library's frequent visitors.
