Fort Mill schools again placed many high school and middle school students in the South Carolina Band Directors Association All-Region and All-State bands.
In all, 174 students earned All-Region seats after competing with other students in Region 3 schools, which includes nine counties in upstate South Carolina. The students who placed highest in the All-Region Bands were invited to compete with other students from across South Carolina for a seat in the All-State band. Forty-six of these students earned seats in the 2009 All-State Band.
Twenty seven of these were high-school students (Fort Mill, 14; Nation Ford, 13), and 19 were middle school students (Fort Mill Middle School, 4, Gold Hill Middle School, 3, and Springfield Middle School-12). Those who weren't seated in the All-State Band were seated in the All-Region Band. Sixty-eight of these were high school students - 34 from each school - and 60 were middle school students (Fort Mill Middle School, 26; Gold Hill Middle School, 4; and 30 from Springfield Middle School).
Two separate auditions for the All-State Bands were held. The first was a regional audition to qualify top students for the final audition and was held in each of the five regions in South Carolina. The second or final audition was held two weeks later at Lexington High School. Region bands were seated from the region audition, and All-State bands were seated from the final audition. Students not selected for All-State from the final audition were seated in the Region band at the top of the section according to the region audition score. The balance of the section was seated according to the region scores.
The South Carolina Band Directors Association's purpose is to recognize outstanding achievements among the band students of South Carolina, to provide encouragement and guidance for the serious students of music, provide worthwhile educational and social experiences for deserving students, and provide enriched music experiences for the participants. They also
provide a medium through which band directors of the state may exhibit their top students.
