Indian Land makes mushy march to band title

INDIAN LAND --

Rainy weather didn't get the Indian Land Marching Band down.

The band braved downpours throughout the day, from the time they stepped on the school buses to make their way to Boiling Springs. The rain was heavy while the band warmed up and the competition was delayed for an hour due to thunder and lightening.

The rain continued during Indian Land's performance, but when they walked away from Boiling Springs High School they left with muddy shoes, dripping hats and the smiles of champions.

Indian Land High School won the first place award for horn line, had the highest scoring horn line in the Silver Division, which included Class I, Class II and Class III bands, and won the first place overall award in Class II.

“They worked hard last week and came out and did everything, so we can't ask for much more than that,” Director Mathew Willis said.

This week, the band will focus on making improvements based on judges' critiques from the Boiling Springs competition. The band will travel to Rock Hill on Saturday for the Olde English Tournament of Bands.

Willis hopes that kicking the season off with a first-place win will excite students for the remainder of the competition season.

“I hope it will really get their energy up,” Willis said.

Nation Ford High School's marching band did not compete last weekend but travels to the Providence Cup on Saturday. Fort Mill High School's band was scheduled to compete last weekend in the Palmetto Esprit de Corps, but the competition was interrupted by rain before Fort Mill could compete.
