It was back-to-back for the Fort Mill boys golf team as they claimed their second Region III-AAAA championship in a row Monday afternoon.
Finishing the regular season with a perfect 23-0 record, Fort Mill won the Region III championship at Spring Lake Country Club in York with a one-day 36-hole total of 600. That score was good enough to beat York, who shot a 643.
The top two teams that finish in the region qualify for the state tournament May 5-6 at Furman University. Nation Ford was third with a 650, missing qualifying for state by seven strokes.
Three Fort Mill golfers made the All-Region team with seniors Jason Hnat, Bryan Otis and Michael Kozlowski making up half the team.
Leading the way was Hnat, who was medalist shooting an even round of 144, which back-to-back even par rounds of 72. Next was Otis, who shot a 146 (74-72) and then Kozlowski with a 149 (75-74).
Gribble said he wasn't surprised with half of the All-Region team being Yellow Jackets.
"I knew we had the potential to do that," he said.
Senior Scott Boston pulled out after a first round 82 with a back injury. Senior Tyler Forbes filled in for Boston in the second round and shot a 79 for a combined total of 161 between the two. Fort Mill finished its scoring with senior Clay Butler, shooting back-to-back rounds of 83 for a 166 on the day.
"I was proud of how the who team played," Gribble said. "We are playing well now."
Fort Mill has three of the last four region titles.
For Nation Ford, who finished the regular season 16-9 after the tournament, it wasn't a bad first year.
Sophomore Brett Snyder led the Falcons with a 154 (78-76), followed by seventh-grader Corey Verhage's 162(82-80), junior Garrett Bruce's 164 (84-80) and freshman A.J. Rosengarth and eighth-grader Evan Mathis' 172. Rosengarth shot rounds of 86-86 and Mathis shot rounds of 84-88.
