Archers Emily Lawal, left, and Joshua Jones aim for the target during practice at Springfield Elementary School last week.

With steady hands, a group of fifth graders at Springfield Elementary School is taking aim at national recognition.

After winning the state title recently, the students go for the national title at the National Archery in Schools Program Championship in Louisville May 10.

The school qualified for the event by winning the state competition April 11 against about a dozen other elementary schools in the state. But to get to the national tournament, the team needs to raise $6,000 to take 20 kids and chaperons. The national tournament could possibly have as many as 30 teams entered.

Springfield's archery program is only three years old. It is coached by John Barrow. It was started with the help of a $4,000 grant from the state Department of National Resources to buy the equipment.

"It's a sport every kid can compete in and be successful," Barrow said.

The 40-member team limits participation to fifth graders. Starting in December, the team comes together and practices preparing for the April state tournament.

Not only did Springfield win it this year, but it swept the top three positions in the state in the boys divisions with Joshua Jones winning. Devin Brizendine finished second and Bailey Fatool finished third. In the girls division, Emily Lawal finished second in the state.

"I'm really happy about the success of our program," Barrow said. "I'm proud of how they performed."

Jones and Lawal, both 11, are two of the students going to Louisville. Jones said being a good archer takes strength and and endurance.

"You have to go through six rounds and not get tired," he said.

At the state tournament, Jones said he knew he was doing really well, but didn't realize he was winning. The tournament was held outdoors compared to where Springfield practices inside their school's gym. Jones said he believes that helped him.

"I like the feeling of being outside," he said.

Lawal said it takes focus to be a good archer, but enjoys the sport because it allows her to spend time with friends.

"I think its really fun and its fun to be with your friends," she said.
