Lady Jackets just miss second place
(Published May 13, 2008)
Fort Mill's Ashley Potts clears the last hurdle in the 400-meter event Saturday. Potts would finish the race in second.

One and-a-half points isn't much, but for Fort Mill, it was the difference between second and third place.

The Lady Jackets track team finished third in the 4A state track and field championship Saturday, losing to Spartanburg by 3.5 points, who won the title, and Northwestern by 1.5 points, who finished second.

But Fort Mill didn't come home empty-handed. The girls won the state title in the 4x 800 meter relay featuring Tiayonna Blackmon, Quanika Blackmon, Abby Lewis and Taylor Miller.

Senior Ashley Potts, who will be running next year at Coastal Carolina University, had a busy weekend competing in four events. Potts had three seconds and a fifth place finish in the high jump with a height of 5 feet, 4 inches.

Potts came in second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.95 and second in the 100-meter hurdles in 15.21. She was also a member of the 4 x 400 relay team, along with Tiayonna Blackmon, Taylor Miller and Lisa Nichols, which finished second.

Senior Tiayonna Blackmon, who will be running at N.C. State next year, also stayed busy competing in four events - two relays and two individual events. In the 1,600-meters, she finished third in 5:17.87 and third in the 800-meter in 2:19.80.

Junior Quanika Blackmon finished fourth behind her sister in the 1,600-meter in 5:19.29. Freshman Abby Lewis finished seventh in the 800-meters in 2:19.70.
