And just like that it was over.
A lone goal in the third overtime against Dorman ended Fort Mill's season with a 1-0 loss. It was the third straight year that Fort Mill lost in the third round of the playoffs, two of those in overtime.
"They are the best team we've seen this season," said Dorman Head Coach Josef Lorenz. "You take your solace where you can find it."
Dorman is known for its fierce girls varsity soccer team and lived up to that. The pushed the Lady Jackets and test their skill. The Jacket defense remained under pressure for the first 20 minutes of the game forcing head coach Jim Finnerty to change his line-up.
In the second half, Fort Mill was the one to put on the pressure until the last 15 minutes. All in all, it was another competition of stamina and will power for the Lady Jackets.
After 100 minutes of playing time, not one goal was made. The girls were midway through sudden death when Dorman managed to sneak one by on a direct kick. The ball bounced off the goal and fell into the net out of the reach of sophomore keeper Alexis McLaine.
"It's just one of those goals you can't save," Finnerty said. "She couldn't do anything about it."
The Lady Jackets shutout North Augusta with a score of 2-0 in the second round.
Senior Ashleigh Sheets managed to bob and weave her way into a perfect shot, and rocketed the ball into the back of the net at the nine minute mark. Next freshman Ashton Wolfe took her shot on goal with only two minutes left in the first half, leaving the first half with the only two goals of the night.
The second half was more a seesaw of possession with Fort Mill and North Augusta Jackets battling up and down the field. Fort Mill defenders Abbie McDonald, Lexi Wilden and Regan Miller made sure that North Augusta stayed thoroughly annoyed though, as not one goal got through the Jackets wall. The ones that did managed to get through, were quickly stopped by McLaine, who chalked up 11 saves throughout the match in goal.
The Fort Mill Lady Jackets finish the season with a record of 18-3-3.
