Two goal lead not enough for Fort Mill in loss
(Published May 13, 2008)
Fort Mill's David Walas and Greenwood's Josh Smith battle for control over the ball during the two's second round game last week in Greenwood.

Showing that no lead is ever safe, Fort Mill fell 3-2 in the second round of the 4A state playoffs last week.

Up 2-0 in the second half, Greenwood scored three unanswered goals forcing two overtimes before getting the win.

Greenwood came into the game ranked 10th in the state and had won five straight Region I-AAAA titles. But despite its success, had not made it to the third round of the playoffs in 14 years.

After a scoreless first half, Fort Mill scored early in the second half on a throw in from senior Matthew Knowe to go up 1-0. Another goal came 16 minutes later as senior Ryan Fielden, who will be playing for Newberry College next year, scored to put Fort Mill up 2-0 with 20 minutes to play. He was assisted by junior Chris Landvik-Larsen

But Greenwood rallied, scoring with 16 minutes to play to get on the board and then tied the game with just six minutes left in the second half.

In the playoffs, overtime goes two 10 minute periods regardless if one team is leading after the first overtime or not.

But less than two minutes into the first overtime, Greenwood's Patrick Hobson sealed the Jackets' fate scoring the winning goal. In a valiant effort, Fort Mill tried, but couldn't score in the remaining 18 minutes.

"The night just didn't go our way," said head coach Lloyd Chalker. "It wasn't for the lack of effort."

Fort Mill keeper Sean Van Etten had six saves in the game.

Fort Mill made it to the second round after breezing through Mauldin in the first round, 3-0.

Freshman David Walas scored in the second half to bring the 0-0 tie off an assist by Fielden. Seven minutes later, Fielden made it 2-0, this time assisted by junior Tyler Vukoder and Landvik-Larsen scored with just nine minutes left to play with an assist from Knowe.

Fort Mill finished the season 14-6.
